Both team started the Cliff Field game with high tempo, but neither were able to break down the other’s well organised defence in the early stages.

All that changed when Jack Greenslade broke clear, rounded the keeper and rolled the ball home to atone for an earlier miss and give the Lympets the lead.

The Colaton response was swift and, when Dan Bowden was penalised for a hand ball offence in then area, Raleigh confidently despatched the resultant penalty kick. Five minutes later the visitors doubled their tally and took a 2-1 lead into the break.

Half-time changes by Lympets boss Duane Greenslade saw the introduction of Jamie Alford and James Beverley with Bowden and Hyde making way.

The new men made a big difference and the home side created a number of good chances, many of which were spurned before then ball fell to Beverley who turned and curled a shot around the Colaton keeper.

It was a goal of real quality and a certain contender for the Lympets goal of the season. Alford then got in on the scoring act as he volleyed home to make it 3-2 to Lympstone.

Both teams then set about seeking another goal, in Lympstone’s case it would surely seal victory whilst for Colaton an equaliser might lead to even better!

With just six minutes remaining a left wing crossed was not cleared and fell to an unmarked visiting player at the far post who smashed it home for 3-3.

The goal certainly lifted the visitors and it was they who scored the seventh and final goal of the game when player-boss Rikki Pitter turned in a tight area before rifling the ball into the far corner of the net to bring his side s 4-3 success.

A disappointed Greenslade said: “Well done to Colaton. They bagged the win in what was a thrilling game from first whistle to last. Of course it’s disappointing to lose, especially when we led with so little time left, but it was a cracking game, one that was played out as I thought it would be. In great spirit by two well matched sides. We fell a tad short on the day, but we will re-group and fight every bit of the ay between now and the last kick of the season to continue our bid for a promotion place.”
