Lympstone 3, Culm United 2
Lympstone stay hot on the heels of the Fresha League Division Two top three after a seventh win of the season on a windy day at the Cliff.
Winning the toss gave the Lympets the opportunity to play with the elements in their favour in the first half.
Even without the significant wind it was the Lympets who looked the better side and they created a number of good scoring opportunities before a sweet pass from Andy Lowe set up his strike partner Hayden Figures to break the deadlock in the 19th minute.
Within a minute the lead was doubled courtesy of a great ball from Danny Bowden into Andy Lowe’s feet that saw the latter turn sharply and unleash a rocket-like shot that flew into the top corner of the visitors net form fully 30-yards.
Scorer then turned provider as Lowe set up Figures to net his second and make it 3-0.
The visitors pulled one back via a free-kick just before the break.
The second half was a much more even contest with the Lympets forced to battle into the strong wind. Goalkeeper Ben Tilley made a number of fine saves, but in one goalmouth scramble the ball appeared to be kicked out of his hands before ending up in the net and, despite home protestations, the goal was allowed to stand!
This set up a nervy last ten minutes for Lympstone. However, it was they who had the best chance to score again when the lively Stu Tuckett was upended by the Culm keeper and a penalty awarded. Andy Lowe dragged his spot kick wide, this being his only blemish on a fantastic individual performance that rightly earned him the Man of the Match award.
On Saturday Lympstone travel to sixth placed Exwick Villa.
