Guest of Honour for Lympstone ABC’s final tournament of the season at the Exmouth Pavilion on Friday week (May 23) is the former British light welterweight champion Darren Hamilton, writes Neil Parsons.

Hamilton left his roots in Bristol to escape a world of crime and travelled to the Capital where he soon found out that the streets aren’t paved with gold and ended up homeless, things started to look up when he was offered a job as a cleaner in a gym.

Hamilton, a qualified personal trainer, lived in a towel cupboard for about four months. He says it was not ideal, but it was a start!

Then Hamilton crossed paths with retired lightweight Spencer Fearon and the rest, as they say, is history. Or, as Hamilton prefers to call it, destiny!

Hamilton won the British title when he was offered a chance to fight light welterweight champion Ashley Theopane at five days notice and duly upset Theopane to become the new British champion.

Hamilton recently lost his title on a split decision after a hotly contested fight.

The Lympstone club will be hosting a team from Finchley ABC, London, who will pitch up with a contingent of ten boxers to take part in an evening of 15 bouts.

Among local boxers in action on the bill are Conner Lester (71kgs) who will meet Kris Onwagabusi of Fincley, Lewis Shaw of Lympstone faces Dan O’Hara from Exeter ABC in a bout at 71kgs and Jon Fenton-Harvey (63kgs) steps up a class to take on Torrington boxer Joe Preece.

Exeter’s Lee Tucker (83kgs) will meet a yet to be confirmed opponent. The night will also include a brace of heavyweight bouts.

In other news, Lympstone’s Angus Smith, 14yrs and 48kgs, made his debut for the club at the Avalon ABC

Tournament in Gloucester when he locked horns with the home club’s Joe Attwell .

Smith started the bout confidently moving around the ring snapping out his jab, fnding his range and keeping his composure to build a solid points advantage.

Attwell started the second with more determination but Smith weathered the initial storm picking his shots carefully and landing some sharp three punch

combinations to finish the round well on top.

The third saw Smith dominate proceedings finishing the bout a deserved unanimous points winner.
