The seniors’ single Stableford took place at East Devon Golf Club on the first Monday of September, writes Paul Willoughby.
Eighty two players took part in the competition which was played in wonderful conditions – hardly a breath of wind, sunshine and a few clouds, in other words a real summer’s day. Bit late now that we have an ‘R’ in the month, but never mind!
Hay Tor was clearly visible to the west, but haze prevented the morning players from seeing beyond Beer Head to the east. Many of the players will have seen the peregrines screaming and diving over the cliffs by the 17th – what a sight!
In the stoop they are the fastest birds in the world – aren’t we lucky to have them on our doorstep?
A perfect day for golf and the leading scores were as follows:-
1, George Lumsden with 42 points from a handicap of 21. Excellent play, George; 2, Mike Sydenham, 41 points (14); 3, Mike Trapnell, 41 points (13); 4, David Cole, 40 points (14); 5, Bob Lankester, 39 points (11); 6, John Crosse, 39 points (25) with handicap now reduced (and about time!); 7, Morton Middleditch, 39 points (18); 8, Robert Loman, 39 points (19) and 9, Mike Whitehead, 38 points (15).
There were 10 two’s sharing a pot of £78. Mike Trapnell had two of them, on the 10th and 13th, but two players who could have joined them in the prize money didn’t enter the two’s competition!
