Lowe lands title triumph at Budleigh

It will certainly be a weekend to remember for long time Budleigh member, former ladies’ captain, former club president and current club treasurer Dianzee Lowe, writes Pat Pearson.
To start she skipped on Budleigh’s team of Pat Pearson, Bunty Hudson and Ann Cottle in the Babs Barlow Shield competition at the Exonia Club, against four other visiting teams and five home teams.
The match was played on a round-robin basis and Budleigh came out on top with 16 points to win the shield.
Then came the Club finals week-end and Dianzee played Angie Fish in the Singles Championship.
What a game that was! Fish started well and held a 12-6 lead at 11 ends. Lowe fought back to tie things up at 13-all at 17 ends.
Fish then edged ahead to lead 20-19 into the final end. Anybody’s game! However, it was Lowe who scored two shots to claim the title.
The Ladies’ Handicap Singles followed and Lowe played Margaret Ratcliffe. From being level at 7-all at eight ends she powered away to seal a 21-9 win.
There was some consolation for Ratcliffe as she and Lowe won the 106 (3-wood) final 106-57.
The 2-wood final was a closely fought match, played by Angie Fish and Celia Mangeng.
At 15 ends Fish was 12-6 ahead before Mangeng pulled it back to trail 13-10 at 20 ends.
That’s where the contest ended as, with only one end left to play, Mangeng could not catch Fish and it was shake hands time!
Janice Brace and Diana Stone were the finalists in the Otter Cup competition and the match featured good bowling played in good spirit, which is what it is all about! After five ends Brace led 5-3, but then Stone scored a four and did not look back, winning 21-11.
Stone then partnered Avril Barrett against Jane Hincks and Ann Cottle in the Ladies Pairs.
Stone and Barrett led 16-10 at ten ends, but six shots scored by their opponents in the next two ends saw the game level at 16-all.
A further ten shots gained over the last six ends saw Stone and Barrett land a 26-17 victory.
