Southleigh, near Colyton-based athlete Lewis Burges has made a good start to the new season.
The 19-year-old member of Exeter Harriers competed in the British Mens Athletic League held at Bedford recently.
Competing in the long jump, the Exeter College student had three attempts to qualify to the final stage of the event where he scraped into the final, and, on his second to last jump he managed to achieve a first position jump with a new personal best of 6.63 metres.
He said: “This represents a really encouraging start for the season ahead. At present long jump training has been difficult due to the closure of the Exeter track whilst major refurbishments are in process, but hopefully it will reopen in the summer.”
Burges is currently in his last year at Exeter College and he has an offer to attend Brunel University in September where athletics is well catered for. One of the coaches used to coach 2012 Olympic champion Greg Rutherford.
