Despite some challenging weather, over the weekend Budleigh Salterton Croquet Club held its Millennium Tournament, an annual fixture since the year 2000, writes Bob Donald.

Seventeen croquet players donned wet weather gear and managed to play 36 games of association croquet.

Each shortened handicap game lasted one-hour-and-thirty-minutes. Bisques (extra turns) had to be taken in the first hour of each game giving more experienced players a chance to make breaks and demonstrate their hoop running abilities in the latter part of the game.

By the start of the second day Tim Liles was a clear leader with only Barbara Thompson, Alan Rush and Martin Yates in a position to overtake him.

However Tim, continued to win all his games to win the tournament with Martin Yates finishing as runner-up.

In the evening players returned to the clubhouse to celebrate two days of very friendly, but highly competitive and skilful play at the Millennium dinner when Tim Liles was presented with a beautifully engraved glass goblet by the tournament manager.
