CS Eagles 3, Budleigh Salterton 1

In the Exeter and District Youth League, Budleigh Salterton Under-15s made the long journey to Uffculme to take on Culm Sampford Eagles on Saturday morning, writes SpursTom.

Not having to travel such distance was clearly beneficial to the hosts for the Robins seemed lethargic in the early periods of the game.

Both teams conceded early corners, but CS Eagles were much livelier, playing with a purpose and determination that belied the position they find themselves in the division.

An 11th minute penalty, awarded against Josh Mingo, was put away with venom by Connor Joyce. The visitors themselves came close at times, but still needed a smart save from their keeper on the stroke of halftime to keep it down to one-goal difference.

The intentions of the Robins to get a goal early never materialised, and it was the hosts who looked the most dangerous going forward.

On 47 minutes they increased their lead, the speedy Harvey Broom out pacing his marker to slot home.

Good defending kept Budleigh to long range shooting, before once again the fleet-footedness of Broom found him the extra yard required to sweep home the third.

Moments later Budleigh were denied by the brilliance of the home keeper. The glovesman was eventually beaten just before the end by Liam Liddell for a consolation goal.

Once again I praise the handling by a match official, like him several of Budleigh’s team gave good performances throughout the match, none more so than Billy Lorains.

It was also frustrating watching some others whose attitudes need questioning as no matter what position you are asked to fill, you should always do your best for the team.
