Woodbury Park was a busy place last week, writes John Bridgman.

The action got underway with a seniors team stableford that resulted in victory for John Man, Mike Haddon and Roy Barber with 81 points.

Dave Freeman, Terry Tilbury and Adrian Foster took second place with 79 and third were Terry Welsh, Peter Martin and Alistair Robertson with a score of 72.

Down on the fifth hole Derek Knights was reaching his peak (perhaps a little early) by scoring a hole-in-one!

Another weeks pension gone down the drain (or throats, one might say). Congratulations Derek.

The following day a team entertained our nearest rivals, East Devon, who complimented us on the state of the course and the redesigned clubhouse area.

It did not stop our boys giving them a bit of a seeing too with a 6-2 success. On a busy day our Emerton Court team were playing Tiverton, and, although they won 6-4, the Mid Devon club progress to the next round on a better overall score.

Over on the Acorns a midweek stableford was won by Pat Thomas with a score of 37.

Taking the minor placings were G Easterbrook and Keith Long, both scoring 33.

On the Oaks course Master Oli Cowl, who carded a score of 34, won on countback from Andy Burgess and Jonathon Oram-Evennett.

Now for the big event of the week which saw the County Golfer Challenge played out.

To digress slightly, many years ago as a young man ,I was fortunate to follow Greg Norman and a film star partner, a good golfer, John Mills, at Stoke Poges Golf Club in Buckinghamshire.

Now it seems I am to follow another John Mills here at Woodbury who has already won a major trophy and last weekend he must have thought he had his second.

However, on the dreaded countback system he had to settle for the runner-up spot. Having won Division One with a score of 40 he lost on a better back nine score to Matthew Smith (40).

There is no doubt in my mind we will see that name again! The ladies played in the Peugot Foursomes and the winning pair were Paula O’Neil and Jane Cross . Well done to everyone, remembering that you have to be in it, to win it, eh!
