Keech crowned South West Lady champion

Sophie Keech is the new South West Ladies champion after netting yet more silverware at Mendip Golf Club in Somerset last week.

Playing in ideal conditions on the first day the ground was dry the sun was warm 36 holes of stroke to decide the top 16 who would go through to the match play ‘knock-out’ stage with Steve Edwards as Caddie on the bag.

A strong field had entered and scoring was tough, the day finished with Sophie at the top of the board after shooting one-over par gross for the two rounds to take the Champion Stroke Play to win The Katherine Cairns Bowl for a second year.

Day two the weather had taken a considerable change as Sophie and local club champion Gill Brown stood on the first tee.

This time Sophie had her winning caddie, Sue Edwards, on her bag.

Thunder rumbled all around although the rain was holding off and a birdie on the second gave her an early lead yet after four the score was back to level, yet as the thunder continued to crash around the teenager unleashed a blistering burst of stunning play winning five of the next six holes which included five birdies at each of the par fives to seal a five-and-three success.

After a break and another storm Keech then played against Emily Toy.

The pair were on the first hole when there was a mighty flash of lightening and the hooter sounded to send the players back to the clubhouse!

When the all-clear was given play resumed, albeit on flooded greens which needed the referee’s attention!

However, young Keech was undaunted by all going on around her as she took her 54 degree wedge and fired her ball across the obstructing water right to the back of the slopping green to within six foot of the pin. She then rolled her putt in to claim a birdie and go two up. From there she did not look back, securing a three-and-two win on the 16th.

Her semi-final was against Bristol player Alexandra Saunders of Bristol against whom Keech showed real class – consistently too – to put superbly to a four-and-two triumph.

That took Keech into the final and a meeting with Exminster’s Lauren Pearce. Once again the Keech game was one of real quality as she claimed a five-and-four victory to lift the Hulleat Salver.

There was no time for young Keech to rest on her laurels, or even savour victory, for later that day she travelled to Gatwick to jet off to Tallin in Estonia to play in The Ladies European!

Among Keech’s collection of trophies this year is the Astor Salver, which she won at the Berkshire last month and she will soon be defending her English Open Amateur Crown at The Warwickshire.
