Jesters need Weymouth win double to keep alive play-off dream

20:07 22 February 2012

Winning one out of the last four games is not what the Jesters had been hoping to see with the end of the season closing in.

Beaten 55-53 at Torbay, 63-54 at Exeter Police and 52-61 to North Devon has not helped the Jesters’ bid to make the playoffs at all.

A home win of 60-43 against Torbay helped to keep the cause alive, but it might be seemed as a bit of a let-off considering that Torbay did not bring a full strength team to compete in Exmouth.

With four games to go the Jesters currently sit third in Division Two with a record of six wins and ten defeats.

Exeter Police are fourth and Torquay sit fifth with the later having games in hand to overhaul the Jesters who now face back to back matches with Weymouth.

Two victories over a Weymouth outfit would certainly boost the Jesters chances of making the play-offs.

“What would we be a shame,” says Jesters Chair Davy, “Is if teams around us end up forfeiting games. It’s something that happened to us last season. Teams that

were likely to win ending up forfeiting against lesser teams lifting them above us come the end of the season. Needless to say I had several expletives to say on the matter.”

Chris Davy the Exmouth Jesters Chair and co-founder of Bridge Building Basketball Exmouth the project that helped create the Jesters is stepping down at the end of

the season. He says: “As much as I’d like to remain in the role it’s important that someone else takes the reigns.”

Davy will still retain his role within Bridge Building Basketball Exmouth and look to help form a Primary Schools programme in Exmouth and the surrounding area.

He says: “It’s important that we help promote the game at the other end of the spectrum now. In order to sustain you need to be able to establish a feeder system. Not only that, but basketball as a sport has an exciting dynamic that many children won’t have experienced in any other sport they play. We encourage participation in all sports and I personally recognise that in order to become a successful sportsperson it’s about being dynamic and having skills that you can reapply in other areas.”

Those interested in starting basketball should attend the 12-1pm session hosted in the Sports Hall, Gypsy Lane, Exmouth Community College on Sundays. Cost £3.

Anyone interested in taking on the role of Chair of Exmouth Jesters basketball club is asked to contact Davy by phone at 01395 273993 or via e-mail to chris.davy@hotmail.co.uk
