The seniors’ singles stableford competition took place at East Devon, writes Paul Willoughby.

Eighty one players braved the mediocre conditions to vie for the top slot; in the summer months there would be over 100 contestants but winter is upon us – strong winds, a bit of drizzle and very wet under foot, hence the reduced turnout.

However, the drainage at East Devon is excellent and whereas some other courses might be unplayable, our home course is usually open albeit there is little run on the ball.

A lot of players will be on the course for the game only but take the opportunity to look around and appreciate your surroundings, both on the ground and in the air.

I was standing (not stood!) on the 18th green and saw a peregrine mobbing a buzzard right above me - a great sight. Eventually the peregrine got bored, put its wings back and dived (the stoop) back to the cliff top at fantastic speed.

Even if you are not playing well there is always something worth seeing.

The leading scores were: 1, John Jago with 38 points from a handicap of 23, now 22;

2, David Matthews 37 points (16); 3, Brian Welch also with 37 points and handicap reduced to 15, 4, Bill Ficken, also with 36 points.

Ficken has been mentioned in despatches quite a few times this year.

There was a two’s pot of £74 to be shared between nine players.
