The September Stableford competition was held at East Devon, writes Paul Willoughby.

There were 96 players that took part and the course was in the same condition as it was for the English Ladies County finals the previous week and the competitors were looking forward to testing the finely shorn greens which had caused the ladies so much trouble – especially the fiendishly difficult three tiered 10th. Some of us just hoped that the example of excellent golf shown by the ladies would rub off on us – for most of us it didn’t! Three putts abounded and the scores were much lower than one would expect in a September stableford.

However some stars shone through, especially in division 1, where some familiar low handicap names appeared on the leader board. The winners of the divisions were as follows:-

Division 1; 1, Bob Humphrey with 37 points from a handicap of five; 2, David Blick with 36 points (-1); 3, Andy Holding with 36 points (7); 4, Joe Sharp with 35 points (4); 5, James Thomas also with 35 points (1).

Division 2; 1, Julian Turnbull with 36 points (11); 2, John Hall with 34 points (13); 3, Alan Baker with 33 points (9); 4 , Paul Murray with 33 points (12); 5, Ian Wilson also with 33 (13).

Division 3; 1, Trevor Reeve with 34 points (23); 2, Neil Jones with 34 points (15); 3, Mark Anderson with 33 points (17); 4, David Matthews with 32 points (16); 5, Alan Foort 32 points (18). There was a two’s pot of £147 shared between 14 players.
