Westexe 1, Woodbury 3
Woodbury turned on the style against a strong Tiverton based Westexe side.
The home side started the quicker, but did not get through to trouble the Woodbury goal. However, in the 15th minute a long ball down the middle caught the Woods out and Westexe took the lead.
Regular changes of personnel followed to ensure everybody got their chance to impress boss Adam Reid.
Brett Gloyn went into central defence whilst Adam Downey’s introduction made a telling difference as did the appearance of new signing Wes Roll who came on and slotted seamlessly into an attacking role.
Alex Hughes played a great ball through to debutant Dom Brown who then beat the keeper to the ball and tucked it away only for the flag to be raised for off-side.
Trailing 1-0 at the break the Woods continued to ring the changes, but despite seeing more of the ball, they were not able to create clear-cut chances.
The leveller finally arrived on the hour mark when a swift throw-out by keeper Brad Evans found Dave Vickery who in turn passed to Roll who advanced before tucking it inside to Rhys Perry. The latter played a slide-rule pass to released Hughes and he needed no second initiation to run on and slot past the keeper.
Ryan Smith then went close before, with 20 minutes to go, the Woods took the lead. Wayne Rowsell shrugged off a challenge on the outside of the box and rifled a great shot that the keeper did well to keep out. However, the ball looped up and fell to Steve Hunt who thumped it home!
Back came the hosts and it needed a smart instinctive save from Evans to deny them an equaliser.
With 10 minutes remaining Hughes found space at a corner and struck his second to complete the scoring.
Boss Reid said: “The win was no more than we deserved. The Man of the Match award rightly went to Brett Gloyn for his role in the centre of defence whilst there were other strong displays from Roll, Hill and Downey. I was delighted with the entire team performance. Seeing that sort of fluency tells me we are on the right lines at just the right time. Everyone made an impact, all the new lads did well and the ball retention is getting better as everyone gets used to the new formation I want the team to adopt.”
