Last weekend Exe Sailing Club hosted the national championships for the Comet Trio dinghy class, writes Mike Rice.
The Trio has strong connections with Exe SC; it was designed by club member Phil Morrison and it is the most popular dinghy class in the club.
Phil was the race officer for the championships, supported by a team of volunteers both afloat and ashore.
A total of 25 boats entered the championships; 17 from Exe SC and the remainder from 7 other sailing clubs around the UK.
Three boats were entered by Scout groups; two from Somerset Scouts and one from the Watchet Sea Scouts.
The weather conditions on the first two days were superb, with a combination of fresh breezes and big waves producing some exciting and competitive racing. Leaders in the clubhouse after the first day were Iain Horlock and Debbie Woodcock, the champions from 2009, with two very clear race wins. In second place were visitors Darren and Callum Padro of Shustoke SC.
On the Saturday, the highly experienced team of Chris Rhodes and Lesley Arscott joined the championships and scored an impressive first, second, and first, but it was not quite enough to take the lead away from Horlock and Woodcock.
When racing was abandoned on the Sunday due to winds gusting over 30 knots, Horlock and Woodcock were declared 2013 Comet Trio champions.
Rhodes and Arscott were runners-up and the Padros finished in third place, just three points ahead of the new champion’s parents – Bob and Collette Horlock, which goes to underline the family appeal of the Comet Trio.
Thanks must go to race officer Phil Morrison and the usual huge team of willing volunteers at Exe SC for organising and running another very successful event.
The strong winds on Sunday did not deter competitors in the Laser national championships, run by Paignton SC and sailed in Tor Bay.
Exe SC’s top Laser sailor Ben Cornish was in action and finished the day in sixth place, just eight points off the lead.
The event concludes on Friday, August 9.
New members are always welcome at Exe SC. Details of how to apply for membership, and of forthcoming events at the club, can be found on the club website at www.exe-sailing-club.org
