There’s been plenty of action for Honiton bowlers in the past week, writes Tony Broughton.
In a Saturday friendly five mixed triples just managed to beat Tiverton Park Bowling Club by 86-83 thanks to good wins by David Tooley, Thelma Flynn and Tony Broughton (22-14). Tony Williams, Jimmy Smith and Dulcie Broughton (32-12) and Di Hawkins, Rosemary Hirons and Gerry Scafrace (15-12).
The following day, Watford and District tourists, in their centenary year, proved a much tougher lot with Honiton losing the match by 19 shots.
Yvonne Williams, Barrie Singleton, Carol Smith and Tony Broughton were the only winning rink, and they claimed victory courtesy of the single shot gained by Tony on the last end.
Margaret Tawes, Brian Long, Keith Parsons and Eddie Sharman had a tough match but managed to draw after picking up a three on the last end.
The Honiton men started well on their Foxlands Trophy campaign winning both rinks against Axminster. At home Tony Broughton, Mike Dart, Kieran Daniels and Ken Large were 25 -14 victors whilst away, Peter Goodwin, Tony Tooley, Malcolm Seaborne and Trevor Pipe bagged a 26-11 win.
Unfortunately they came up against Madeira in the next round. Tony Broughton, being away, was replaced by Ken Clarke who this time were the away leg and won, but the other team at home lost heavily losing the match. Better luck next year.
In their County Trophy match against Feniton they faired better winning all four rinks and they also had a 4-1 victory over Axminster in the National Top Club. They now face Madeira again in the next round!
Honiton ladies continued their good fortune when beating Crediton in the National Top Club competition winning three of the four disciplines. They now meet Hemyock at Honiton.
In that match with Crediton Carole Binkore had a 21-4 win in the singles whilst there was a 24-17 defeat in the pair’s for Yonne Rayner and Shirley Hiscocks. Joan Heard, Lynda Dommett and Sue Evans were 20-16 in the triples and there was a 23-22 success in the fours for Dulcie Broughton, Ann Hillyear, Brenda Harris and Carol Smith 23-22.
Honiton Ladies won their Interclub match against Teignmouth Den by 54-27.
Lynda Dommett,Brenda Harris, Carol Smith and Shirley Hiscocks lost 18-17, but Yvonne Rayner, Dulcie Broughton, Carole Binmore and Sue Evans won 37-9.
Further good news from the ladies is that Carole Binmore and Sue Evans are through to last 16 of the county in the pairs and also both are through in the Two Wood Singles. Sue is also through in the Four Wood singles.
Finally, Carol Armitage, Anne Newman, Lynda Dommett and Carol Smith won the Spears Trophy, the Sidmouth Ladies Invitation competition by a staggering plus 30 shots.
Second were the Sidmouth captain’s team with plus 17. The Honiton Ladies played really well and gained a hotshot on their way to lifting the trophy.
