Ottery St Mary racing car driver Ed Hollier battled for supremacy in the MG Car Club’s Wiscombe Park hill climb.
At the wheel of his 1600 c.c. Suzuki Hyabusa powered Pilbeam MP62 Hollier added to his brace of wins the previous weekend when he stormed to victory in a time of 35.84 seconds to take The Fastest Time of the Day from another MP62, the two litre version of Andrew Dinner who posted a best climb of 37.24.
Hollier was not the only trophy winner from Ottery as Stephen Wickers took third place in the Pre 1955 Standard and Modified 1101-1500 c.c. class in his MG XPEG engine Dellow Mk2. The professional pilot guided his 1952 manufactured machine to the top of the 900 metre course in 57.25 seconds following home Andrew Morlands MG engine Lotus 6 and the MG Dargue Special of Chris Pamplin.
Dave Norman claimed third place with his Renault Clio 172 Cup in the 1800 c.c. – 2600 c.c. category of the Road-going Production Car class. The Exeter company director climbed to a best time of 47.09.
The Road-going Specialist Production class for cars with engines ranging from 1400 to 1800 c.c. was won by Exeter garage proprietor Roger Coote in his Ginetta G32. Roger’s time of 47.12 gave him the victory by just over one second leaving another Exeter resident, Ian Hodgson in the runner-up slot with his Westfield SEiW.
The following day the National Hill Climb Association event put motorcycles centre stage at Wiscombe Park. Jimmy Hodges set the track alight not only taking a class win but also claiming a maximum points haul for the British Championships.
The motorcycle mechanic, who claimed the British championship crown in 2010, started his winning ways in the 500 cc class. Aboard his 450 c.c. Honda GV CRF he set a first climb time of 40.84 seconds to take an early lead but improved his pace at the second time of asking securing the win with a 40.53 best. Apart from bringing victory in the class this time constituted a new outright hill record improving on the previous benchmark of 40.78 seconds. Tom Short claimed the runner-up slot with his 470 c.c. Honda CRF just under one second in arrears with Tommy Hodge collecting the third place award on 42.12 seconds.
The 750 c.c. category saw the initiative taken by Jimmy Hodges with a first climb of 40.99 which gave him hope of a double win but Paul Jeffery on his Honda CR put paid to that with ascent in 40.75 seconds. Hodges was unable to find any further pace so was obliged to settle for the runner-up slot ahead of Glynn Poole and his Honda CRF. Poole also took third in the 1300 c.c. class on his Buell behind the winner Ben Wilkins who stormed his Aprilia Falco to the top of the 900 metre course to a new outright two wheel record of 40.28 seconds.
Chris Keates claimed the honours in the 250 c.c. class when he husled his Suzuki RM to the win by a healthy margin over second placed Duncan Fisher and his Yamaha. Keates carried good speed to climb in 44.92 seconds. The Keates family took another winner’s trophy when Patrick and Paul claimed victory in the Sidecar class on their Baker F1 outfit by just under a stunning four and a half seconds.
