Promoting club Teignbridge Trotters’ description of their annual event is: ‘Six miles of breathtaking off-road running in the heart of glorious Dartmoor’, and that explains the popularity of the Haytor Heller, run this year last Saturday (July 19), writes Dave Eveleigh.

It has though often been competitively as well as aesthetically pleasing for the club. Both male and female team awards were won by Exmouth this year. The men’s winners were; Adam Miller, ninth and third Man Over-35 in a time of 46:40, Hugh Marsden was 15th and first Man Over-55 in 49:26, Jon Garrity was 18th in 50:18 and Scott Jordan 37th in 54:59.

The women’s winners were Jane MacDonald 82nd and beaten for first woman over-45 by just two seconds in a time of 60:43, Cathy Newman, 84th and second Woman Over-50 in 61:18, Lorraine Gilson, 107th and third woman Over-55 and Dawn Teed 146th in 67:50 - Cathy finished in some pain due to injury. There were three other Harriers among the 264 runners who finished: Dave Wright 43rd and second Man Over-50 (56:03), Richard Pyle 53rd (57:29) and Nicholas Brown 95th (63:10).

Nicholas would have found this a little less demanding than his participation in the Charmouth Challenge (‘England’s most southerly fell race’) around two weeks earlier, on July 5, when he finished 73rd out of 234 in 75:50.
