Lympstone 1, South Zeal 2
Lympstone slipped to a narrow defeat in their final game of 2013.
The contest was no different to the regular fare served up by these sides when they meet.
Both teams began brightly, but neither could find a finish to match respectable approach play.
The deadlock was broken on the half hour when a long ball from the visitors defence found its way through after a couple of deflections straight into the path of a striker who calmly slotted the ball home for what proved to be the only goal of the first half.
Lympstone made a bright start to the second half and deservedly levelled when a great first touch and crisp turn by Dan Griffiths ended with him rifling the ball into the top corner of the South Zeal net from 25-yards!
The Lympets began to dominate proceedings, but could not find a second and were punished for their failings in front of goal when the visitors struck via a counter-attack that resulted in a penalty, confidently slotted to restore the South Zeal lead.
Thereafter the home side battled in vain to find a second equaliser and so slipped to a damaging fifth defeat of their Fresha League Division Two season.
On Saturday Lympstone begin the new year with a home game against Halwill and the Reserve’s make the short trip to Woodbury.
