Great weather for Devon and Somerset Glding Club members

Easter Monday was full of optimism for good gliding weather developing at the Devon and Somerset Gliding Club, writes Jill Harmer.

By the afternoon, a small group of pilots enjoyed some pleasant soaring weather in the local area.

Rick Andrews from Bradninch achieved the longest flight with 67 min completing another duration benchmark towards his Licence. Ruth Comer from Exeter completed her first solo aerotow.

On Thursday, the forecast was hopeful, and 10 private gliders joined the club training operation. In the event, although the sky looked fantastic with white puffy cumulus clouds, the cloud base stayed at between 1500ft and 1800ft over North Hill. Matt Wright from Washfield in his ASW24 managed to squeeze a task out of the day, by creeping off to M5 junction at Tiverton and then looking for seabreeze front over Wellington and Taunton, turning Yeovil in the process, and then struggling back under wishy washy clouds. - But another club 100km flight in the bag.

Matt is now leading the DSGC Club ladder by 27 points over Pete Startup from Ottery St Mary, both have scored six flights - and so early in the season.

The planned South West Region Inter-Club League weekend at The Park near Mere had to be cancelled due to a poor forecast.
