Dartmouth’s John Cousins, playing off 20, won the Jubilee Claret Cup with 41 stableford points just beating off a challenge from Joe Mason of Saunton with a better back nine score.

Joe, a left-handed 81-year-old, took the Gordon Moore Trophy for the over-70s for his effort. “I’m delighted,” he said at the presentation. “I haven’t done so well for years.”

More than 150 over-60s took part in the event which survived the thunder , lightning and torrential rain which caused floods a few miles away but only held up play for a short while.

Runner-up in the over-70s section was David Jack (19) of Tiverton with 40 points and Eric Lake (21) of Holsworthy was third.

Top three in the 0-18 handicap section were: Colin Walmsley (17) of Holsworthy with 40, Les Kingsbury (18) of Royal North Devon and Ken Cole (12) of Tavistock who both had 38 points.

Alan Phillips (22) of Borringdon Park won the 19-28 handicap group with 40 points and Mike Wall (26) East Devon, also 40, was second and Chris Jay (19) Ilfracombe third.
