Archant

After the deluge of rain this week, Sunday dawned with a beautiful clear blue sky and light westerly winds, and the members were out in force, writes Jill Harmer.

We would normally have flown on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday as well - but it was just too wet.

With North Hill airfield being on top of the Blackdown Hills, it was still draining from the 20mm of rain that had fallen on Saturday, so to protect the airfield from the rigours of winch launching, it was deemed an aerotow-only day.

The hangar was quickly emptied with 6 club gliders prepared for flight and several private owners also rigged their gliders.

There were some weak thermals in the morning and Liam Vile had the longest flight of 34 minutes. Liam is one of our very active Junior members having gained a place at Exeter University, is working hard to regenerate a Gliding Club for the Students.

Mark Courtney and William Pope in the DG505 found some weak wave lift in the Honiton valley, caused by the westerly wind bouncing over Dartmoor, to extend their flight.

After check flights with an Instructor, Matt Smolinski and Rick Andrews were both authorised to fly aerotow launches solo.

There were 23 flights in all enjoying the wonderful spring-like conditions.
