After the heavy rain on Friday and frosted greens over the weekend there were big concerns as to whether the East Devon Golf Club’s, Valentines Competition would go ahead last Sunday.

Although a trolley ban was introduced over the weekend and there were temporary greens, a magnificent 96 players competed in the Valentines Competition, which was reduced to eleven holes.

The cold weather conditions didn’t put off the hardy golfers and there were some very good scores – obviously temporary greens suit some people!

This competition – a Ladies Invitation Valentine’s Day mixed golf and supper was first introduced in 1992, which was also a leap year, by Di Higgins, a past member. Her conditions were clear – husbands and wives could not play in the same four. The Ladies organise it, and, although husbands and wives do play in the same four now, but not as partners, we celebrated its 20th year and hope that it will continue to flourish.

Post competition the prizes were presented by the Ladies Captain, Shirley Pressey and Captain, Stephen Phillips.

Marilyn Gerrard and Jeff Bartlett landed first place followed by Anne Serle and Bernard Ireson in second place with Sarah White and Keith Glover finishing third. Thereafter the next seven to finish were; Margaret Evans and Colin Pratt (4th), Alison Kent and Paul Willoughby (5th), Julie Sampson and John Hall (6th), Hazel Munyard and David Brunwin (7th), Ali Miller and Mike Wall (8th), Judy Nelson and Mike Sydenham (9th) and Carol Miller and Roy Jenkinson finished 10th.

There were two two’s during the event with the pairs, Val Humphrey and John Bain together with Ali Miller and Mike Wall, collecting 42 balls for their success.

An excellent supper and prize giving was attended by 110 players and guests in the evening, and with the Clubhouse decorated in true Valentine style by the Ladies Committee, it was a superb end to a very enjoyable day.
