Wyatt stars as East Budleigh Reserves see off Honiton Town Reserves

East Budleigh Reserves 3, Honiton Town Reserves 0

This was an excellent team display from East Budleigh Reserves who ran out comfortable winners against Honiton last Saturday, writes Mark Auton.

In what were very difficult playing conditions Budleigh played with the wind in the first half and were rewarded with the opening goal in the second minute.

Jack Howarth’s shot looped up off the keepers legs and it was Ben Wilks in the right place to follow in and smash the ball into the net.

Despite the breeze being against them the away side had their moments and after winning a series of corners failed to take their chance.

In the 20th minute Budleigh went close to a second; Howarth’s finely struck corner was touched on by Adam Wheatley for Jack Hocking whose effort was cleared off the line.

With the very next attack Harry Trick won the ball back for Budleigh, played a neat exchange with Howarth who set up Hocking whose shot was held by the Honiton stopper.

The pressure on the visitors goal eventually lead to Budleigh increasing their advantage before the interval. Wilks hit the post from an angle and, when Tom Christian played the ball back in, it was Ben Wyatt who fired the ball into the net.

The second half was a much different game for Budleigh, who found it hard to get out of their own half; Tom Hurley, Wheatley, Rich Wyatt and Gary Western had to work hard as a unit to protect keeper Mark Bown who was called upon to make just a couple of saves.

Honiton’s closest effort came in the 63rd minute when they struck the Budleigh upright.

Alex Manning, Max Tooby and Dan Atkinson all came off the bench for Budleigh and it was the latter who wrapped up the win; Strong play from Ben Wyatt allowed Hocking to pick the ball up and from his cross Manning’s header down was nodded gleefully over the line by Atkinson who beat the Honiton keeper to it, in what seemed like slow motion.

Man of the Match went to Ben Wyatt for another outstanding effort in Budleigh’s midfield engine room.

This Saturday Budleigh make the long journey to neighbours Otterton, whilst the First X1 are at Witheridge in Division 1.
