Culm United 1:2 Exmouth Amateurs

Exmouth Amateurs opened up a whopping 16 point lead at the top of the Fresha League Division One table with a 2-1 win at Culm United, writes Ross England.

The game was played at Kentisbeare which is home to Culm whilst their own Madgelake headquarters undergoing the completion of new changing rooms.

In what were heavy conditions in Mid Devon, Ammies began brightly and fashioned a couple of excellent early opportunities, neither of which they could take.

However, the early pressure paid dividends when a run from Jamie Williams into the box was ended by him being hauled down and Tim Wright tucked the resultant penalty away.

Ammies dominated the remainder of the first half but without adding further goals and went into the break with the one goal advantage.

Culm began the second period the sharper and, not for the first time this term, the Ammies back line were able to restrict their time on the ball and indeed space, to such a degree that keeper Ben Maddison was merely a bystander!

Ammies doubled their lead with twenty minutes to go when a Richard Higham cross was volleyed into the net by Tim Wright.

Ammies then seemed to relax and certainly took their foot off the pedal. A clumsy challenge in the area was correctly penalised with a penalty that was confidently tucked past Maddison to set up an unnecessarily nervy last ten minutes.

The defence was up to the challenge though, and ensured that the game was closed out without further worries.

Back at Warrenview a frozen pitch resulted in the second team having another blank day.

On Saturday Ammies entertain the side sitting immediately below them at the top of the table, Phoenix Club. With all ten previous home games won and just three goals conceded, another home win looks on the cards. Were that to happen then Ammies would be mighty close to the title their season deserves.

On Saturday the Ammies Reserves travel to Bampton.
