White strike nets Robins victory over table-toppers

Budleigh Salterton bounced back from the disappointment of their 4-1 Greenway Lane defeat to University seven days before to win 2-1 at table-topping Newton Abbot Spurs, and the three points were no more than the Robins deserved for a terrific all-round performance.

Liam Ellis and Dan Boere, who both missed what had been a generally below-par Robins show against the students, returned to the fold with Boere tasked with replacing Kyle Bassett in a striking role while Ellis slotted into a back three with player boss Kevin Hill and Mike White.

Budleigh made a good start and bossed much of the first half. Such was their dominance that they could – indeed, perhaps should – have had the game ‘in the bag’ by the half-time break.

The first ‘sight of goal’ for either team came in the 15th minute when Mike White got down the left flank before delivering a cross that Jordan Harris headed marginally wide.

Two minutes later Harris went through one-one-one with Neil Montanden, but the Newton Abbot Spurs goalkeeper got the better of the situation – as he did twice more before the break to keep his side in the contest.

Montanden also made a smart save to deny George Pannell in the 25th minute. The first time in the game that the home side worked Budleigh goalkeeper Alan Doble was 10 minutes before the break when the Robins glovesman made a smart save to deny Adam Dyson.

The deadlock was finally broken on the hour when Pannell got away down the right before cutting in and rifling a shot that Montanden saved, only for the ball to fall invitingly to Boere, who drilled it home from close range.

Eight minutes later parity was restored when Chris Metters nodded the ball beyond Doble.

Both teams then fashioned half chances before the contest was decided by a superb strike.

There were five minutes remaining when, following a melee in the home area, the ball was cleared, but only as far as the edge of the area where White was on hand to hit the sweetest of shots that arrowed its way into the net beyond a fully stretched Montanden.

White was named Man of the Match for a superb shift on the left side of a back three, his performance topped by that stunning winning strike.

The Robins visit St Martins on Saturday (December 23) and then, on Boxing Day, they entertain Sidmouth Town (11am).
