Exmouth Spartans made a winning start to a new Devon and Exeter League Division Five season with a 3-1 win at Culm United Reserves.

Spartans made a flying start and took a second minute lead thanks to a smart turn and finish by last season’s leading scorer Dan Fulls.

Just seven minutes were added before the lead was doubled and again Fulls provided the finish, this time after a flick from Rob Welsman prior to Fulls knocking the ball home at the far post.

The home side hit back, but the outstanding Jack Walsh in the Spartans goal made a string of super saves to ensure he held a clean sheet through to half-time.

After the break the home side continued to press for a way back into the contest and they got the goal they deserved with Walsh finally beaten in the 65th minute.

The game then entered a phase of end-to-end action before the points were settled with a third goal for Spartans.

It was Luke Bradford who scored it, netting after he was sent away down the right before cutting in and drilling the ball into the net by the near post.

Culm hit back, but once again the impressive Walsh, who was named Man of the Match by both teams, was equal to the best the home side could throw at him.

On Saturday (September 1) Spartans entertain Cranbrook, who lost their opening match, beaten 1-0 at home by Upottery Reserves.

The following Saturday Spartans are in Football Express Cup action when they travel into Exeter to meet Exeter United.
