Budleigh Salterton Under-15s made a superb start to their 2018 schedule as they made the short trip across to Lympstone where they registered an impressive 7-2 success, writes SpursTom.

Having not kicked a ball in anger since the first week of December, the young Robins were clearly delighted to be back in action and kick-starting their bid for a top three finish in the Exeter and District Youth League Under-15 Division One.

However, the hosts also looked pleased to be back in action and it was they who struck first with a fourth minute goal from Sam Phillips.

In the 15th minute the Robins fashioned their first chance with Tom Real rifling a shot goal wards that home glovesman Connor Guest tipped over the bar.

That ‘near thing’ was followed by a series of Robin’ corners – four inside the next seven minutes before parity was restored with Matt Shaw-Smith the Budleigh scorer. Minutes later Ryan Fell thumped home a free-kick and then Will Cooper added a third before, under pressure from Shaw-Smith, an unfortunate home defender turned the ball into his own net and Budleigh trooped off at the break 4-1 to the good.

After the interval, with the wind behind their backs, and playing up the slope, the Lympets began brightly and, 25 minutes into the second half, Jack Bungay headed home a corner to take Lympstone to within two goals of the Robins.

However, the home celebrations were short lived for the fleet-footed Shaw-Smith swiftly restored the three goal margin.

There was a huge cheer six minutes later when the popular Joe Vincent saw his perseverance rewarded with the sixth Budleigh goal and there was still time for Will White to drill home a free-kick and complete the scoring.
