Sunday’s sporting round-up: Exmouth Town win away / Cockles score half century of points in latest home success / Lympstone win away / East Budleigh beaten

It was another ‘Super Saturday’ for Exmouth’s big two - Exmouth RFC and Exmouth Town FC as both recorded excllent wins.

Exmouth Town trailed 3-1 at Cornish high-fliers St Austell, but dug deep to hit back and win the SWP League top flight fixture 4-3.

Town, who took a full coach to St Austell for the game are enjoying a terrific season and this result is the perfect ‘warm-up’ to the big game – next \Saturday’s FA Vase tie against Western League Premier Division side Cadbury Heath.

Trailing 1-0, an Ace High strike late in the first half meant parity at half-time. The home side then took a 2-1 lead before having a player sent off, but still increased their advantage top 3-1 before goals from Nathan Cooper and substitute Steve Avery levelled things up. A superb comeback was completed when Cooper netted his second a minute from time.

Budleigh Salterton were beaten 8-1 at Bovey Tracey in an SWP League Eastern Division game.

In Macron League football there was another heavy defeat for the Exmouth Town second team as they were thumped 10-0 by an Okehampton Argyle side enjoying just their second win of the top flight campaign.

There was another defeat for Budleigh Reserves. Indeed, completing an all-round disappointing day for Budleigh Salterton, the second team went down 5-0 at Sandford.

Also in Division Three, there was no joy for East Budleigh either as the Jays went down 4-0 at home to University 4ths.

However, Lympstone were 4-1 winners at Tipton St John and Otterton beat visiting North Tawton 3-2.

In Division Seven, East Budleigh Reserves went down 4-3 at Okehampton Argyle.

In Division Eight, Exmouth Town thirds lost 3-1 at Tedburn St Mary thirds and Topsham Town Reserves won 4-0 at Millwey Rise Reserves

The Cockles defeated Old Patesians at the Imperial Ground, beating the Cheltenham-based side 50-24.

Another excellent Imperial Ground crowd saw the Cockles lead 38-12 at half-time before going on to make it four home wins from four South West Premier outings, scoring a half century of points in a league game for the first time this season.

The Cockles scored no fewer then eight tries with three players, Dave Bargent, Jack Downie and Henry Goldson. The other two tries came from George Meadows and Mike Richards,

Such was the powerful start made by the team that the bonus point was in the bank just 18 minutes after kick-off!

The win takes the Cockles up to third in the table and they are just four points shy of second placed Ivybridge, who, in turn, are only four points behind leaders Bournemouth who remain the only side in the division to sport a season-long unbeaten record.

Withycombe slipped closer to the relegation slots in Tribute Cornwall and Devon when beaten 24-17 at a Tavistock side that climbed above them in the table with the win.
