Brixington Blues Under-9s won a thrilling Exeter and District Youth League KO Cup tie against Moors Youth, beating the Tiverton-based opposiiton 2-1 with their goals being scored by Harry Batten and Josh Lawrence.
Blues made an excellent start and their early endeavours were rewarded when Harry Batten’s shot from the right took a deflection before nestling in the bottom corner of the net.
Blues continued to dominate the early exchanges, and, on the rare occasions Moors Youth got forward, Willem Stortenbeker was on hand to clear things up, denying Moors time and space to carry a threat.
Oliver Dawkins and Harry Batten pressed well in midfield, but the Moors were able equalise after a hopeful shot from long range took a deflection, giving goalkeeper Evan Clark no chance.
However, the lead was restored soon after with great link-up play from Dawkins, passing wide right to Batten, who laid the ball into the path of Josh Lawrence to side foot home and give Blues a 2-1 lead.
Ryan McCann started to make his presence felt with several good runs causing the opposition problems.
Frank Shelton cleared trouble for the Blues at the back and Charlie Cain’s constant commitment to harrying the oppositions kept the Blues dominant in the game. Evan Clark made a superb save tipping the ball over the crossbar to maintain the lead going into half-time.
After the break, Harry Tooby’s tenacity helped restrict Moors to long shots, and he was given terrific support by his team mates in what was a fine all-round performance.
Stortenbeker had a great game at the base of the midfield turning opposition pressure into counter attacker time after time and he got the deserved Man of the Match. Despite more pressure from the Blue neither team were able to score in the second half and Blues closed the game out well to book a berth in the next round of the competition.
