A long-range strike gave Budleigh Salterton a well-deserved point away at league leaders Crediton United, writes Alan Beer.

The opening 20 minutes of the South West Peninsula League Eastern Division clash saw Budleigh creating the better chances, but unable to put any away, with Crediton limited to the odd counter attack.

Then on 40 minutes the best chance of the half fell to Aaron Denny for Budleigh, whose shot came back off the keeper before a defender was able to clear.

Then, right on the stroke of half-time, there was an appeal for a penalty when Denny was brought down just on the edge of the six-yard box, but the referee waved it away.

The start of the second half was much the same as the first, with Budleigh again creating chances and Crediton limited to counterattacks.

That was until just on the hour, when a move down the right hand side produced a cross for Richard Blake to tuck in at the near post to make it 1-0 to the home side.

Budleigh then replied on 75 minutes, levelling the score when a loose ball bobbling around the 18 yard box was cleared by the Crediton defence and fell to Callum Shipton 25 yards out, who rifled it into the top left corner to make it 1-1.

The game finished at 1-1, with Budleigh glad to come away with a point they worked hard for.

Budleigh’s next game is away at Appledore this Saturday, with kick-off at 2.15pm.
