University of Exeter 1, Exmouth Town 2

Town continued their unbeaten start to the season when they came from a goal down to beat the University of Exeter 2-1 in a Throgmorton cup-tie, writes John Dibsdall.

Town’s first half display was not one of their better performances of the season.

They all too often gave the ball away and whether it was Town being lethargic or the students being quicker to the ball the result was the same and it was no surprise when the hosts went ahead on twenty seven minutes.

If Town had shown little in the first half, the second half show was a complete reversal.

They had the perfect start when Dan Boere was brought done after the ‘keeper had mishandled and Ben Shephard made no mistake from the resulting spot kick all within the first minute of the half!

Thereafter, Town dominated and should have won this tie by a far greater margin.

Lloyd Gardner had a shot cleared off the line, Ace High brought a fine save and late on a surging run from Sam Woodin ended in a shot that flashed by the far post.

Town’s winning goal was of real quality and deserved to have won any match.

Ben Wholley won the ball in his own half, pressed forward and his pass found Shephard on the edge of the penalty box from where he turned and smashed the ball high into the roof of the net with the ‘keeper helpless.

Town have been drawn at home to Axminster in the second round, the tie to be played on Saturday, October 20.

This Saturday Town travel to Stoke Gabriel who are currently second in the table and will provide a stern test and then, next Wednesday evening (October 3) they host Okehampton Argyle. Kick-off at Southern Road is 7.30pm.
