Otterton gained their second consecutive league win after a real battling performance that saw them to a 3-2 home win over University in a Macron League Division Three meeting.

What made the win all the more impressive was that the students pitched up at Stantaway sporting a 100 per cent record so far this season, and held a 2-0 half-time lead!

University began the game passing the ball with all the confidence of an unbeaten side and the Otters were forced to defend for much of the opening third of the contest.

In that time they also had a couple of narrow escapes with the ball striking the frame of the goal while home goalkeeper Alex Yolland made a number of fine saves.

In the 31st minute the home defence was finally breached with a header from a corner and they doubled the lead with a powerful shot that took a deflection on its way past Yolland to leave the students in charge at half-time.

It was not all one way before the break and both Ryan Mitchell and Matt Lidstone went close to opening the Otterton account.

Whatever Otters boss Doug Dale said at half-time clearly worked. There was a positional ‘tweak’ with Lee Mitchell moving into midfield and this had the desired effect and led to the deficit being halved early in the second half with a Kevin Pitt goal.

With 20 minutes remaining, Lidstone was bundled over in the box and a confident Gary May stepped up to drill the spot kick home.

With the game looking set to end all square May set off on a mazy run through the middle only to be hacked down, but some excellent refereeing allowed play to continue and the ball found substitute Adam Rolls who lifted it up and over the on-rushing University glovesman to win the game for Otterton.

On Saturday (October 14) Otterton travel to Countess Wear Dynamos.

Otterton Reserves shared six goals with hosts Cheriton Fitzpaine. The Otterton goals were scored by Mark Dobrijevic, Marc Bowles and the evergreen Richard Harding. This Saturday the second team are at home to Babbacombe Corinthians in the Intermediate Cup (2pm).
