Budleigh Salterton suffered a fifth home defeat of the South West Peninsula League Eastern Division campaign when beaten 4-1 by University at Greenway Lane.

When the sides had met in Exeter in September, the Robins won 7-2, but the Students have been in good form lately and fully deserved their win against a strangely below-par home side.

It took University just four minutes to get their noses in front when their talented skipper, Jamal Bartley, provided the assist for Luke Barner to drill the ball home.

Barner then had another effort saved by Budleigh glovesman Alan Doble, but it was not all one-way and, for much of the opening 20 minutes, Budleigh gave as good as they got and there was plenty of goalmouth action at either end of the pitch.

Just past the half-hour mark, Bartley found himself in space on the edge of the area, but his powerful shot was well saved by Doble.

In the 40th minute, the lively Joseph Hooten saw an effort hit the side netting, but minutes later Hooten provided the cross from which Barner scored his second to leave Budleigh two down at half-time.

Early in the second half Budleigh were masters of their own downfall as possession was lost in the middle third and the students punished the error by getting the ball forward quickly to Bartley, who rifled it home.

The home side then had two strong claims for a penalty, but both appeals, for fouls on first Aaron Denny and then Mike White, were turned away by the match official.

In the 63rd minute, Budleigh scored with a Jordan Harris header from a Mike White corner, but that was as good as it got for the home faithful with the students wrapping up the points with a late fourth, scored by Christopher Lund after a good run and cross by Hooten.

A disappointing all-round Budleigh show saw them fall to a first defeat since October 14. They were hamstrung with a number of players missing. On Saturday (December 16) they travel to table-topping Newton Abbot Spurs (3pm) and hope to have both Dan Boere and Liam Ellis back available after the pair missed the University defeat.
