Budleigh Salterton became the first team in the three divisions of the South West Peninsula League to complete their season when they travelled to North Devon and went down 2-1 at Ilfracombe Town.

It was a disappointing way for the Robins’ campaign to end for they journeyed up the North Devon Link Road looking to claim a fifth successive victory.

However, on a bumpy surface, the Robins failed to repeat the superb form they had been showing in recent games, and they fell behind in the closing stages of the first half. The goal was ‘harsh’ on Robin’s glovesman Alan Doble, who made a superb save to keep the ball out only for Joe Seldon to head the loose ball home.

The game’s second goal arrived in the 85th minute; when a long kick, taken from deep in his own half by Ilfracombe defender Brodie Montague, ended in the back of the Budleigh net!

Deep into stoppage time James Sharkey provided the assist for Mark Lever to net the 89th and final goal of the Budleigh SWPL Eastern Division campaign.

The defeat saw Budleigh drop to third in the table and, with teams below them having plenty of games to play, it is likely the Robins will slip one more berth and finish in the top four which would represent an excellent first season under the management of Kevin Hill.
