Ashmoor 3, Ammies Ladies 1
Ammies, without a game for the previous three weeks, and with a bare eleven players on duty, travelled to face the champions on a hot sunny Sunday afternoon.
Ammies stuck brilliantly to their game plan in the first half allowing the hosts possession in their own half, but working extremely hard to close down their opponents when they pressed forward.
With the Ammies back four in superb form, there was precious little for keeper Rose to do in the opening changes.
At the other end Ammies fashioned a couple of opportunities. First Steele just failed to connect with Rowe’s cross and then Steele and Wills saw shots well saved by the Ashmoor keeper.
The hosts took the lead late in the half when their striker pressured the defence into a slight error and fired home from the edge of the area.
Two early second half goals took the game beyond Ammies which was a shame as they had put much into the contest. To their credit the Ammies Ladies refused to concede the game and battled back. A tweaking of formation led to Hawkins and Rowe being moved further forward. With Wills and Steele providing the crosses, Ammies looked more threatening and they eventually scored the goal their industry and effort deserved when Steele and Harkness combined prior to Wills laying the ball off to Rawlings who beat her defender and hit a unstoppable shot into the roof of the net for what proved to be the final goal of a thoroughly entertaining game.
