Budleigh Salterton 1, Shakespeare 1 (after extra-time) Budleigh win on penalties

Budleigh booked a last 16 place in the Graddon Vending Devon Premier Cup after a shoot-out success against the Plymouth-based visitors, writes Alan Beer

The visitors created the first chance after just three minutes when Jamie Grindrod headed wide.

Ten minutes later Jack Greenslade crossed from the right and found Sam Schlaefli but his shot from 12-yards out glanced off the outside edge of the post.

The woodwork again came to the rescue of the visitors when Peter Grover shot from 18-yards, only to find the woodwork and see the ball rebound to the keeper.

Shakespeare again went close, this time an effort from Zac Edwards was just too high.

Just before the break The Robins again found woodwork, this time it was a shot come cross from Darren Carr out on the left wing.

Early in the second period Grover again tested the visiting keeper with a long range shot. Then came a dramatic change in the weather conditions.

Heavy rain and a strong wind appeared to help the visitors most.

A long through-ball fell kindly for Joe Knight who fired past Adrian Pullin from 20-yards out.

The Robins struggled to make a breakthrough and it was not until the final minute that it arrived with Tim Nield being the saviour, forcing extra time.

During both periods of extra time it was the Shakespeare keeper who somehow managed to keep his team in the game, and so to the dreaded penalty shoot out.

It was now the turn of The Robins keeper, Pullin to turn hero, saving three of the visitors penalty shots, with Budleigh not missing any of theirs leaving the home faithful to celebrate shoot-out success and a place in the last 16 of the competition.

Budleigh; Pullin, Hancock, Carr, Pallett, Nield, Sale, Ellis, Schlaefli, Grover, Greenslade, Williams: Subs Pannell, Shipton (both played)

On Saturday Budleigh return to Eastern Division action and a trip to second bottom Plymstock United.
