Archant

Colaton Raleigh 5, Hideway Café 4 (after extra-time)

This was a match that 16-year-old Dan Corrick, making his first team debut for Colaton Raleigh, will never forget.

Two goals down within six minutes, and playing with just ten players for almost an hour of this match, a very special performance from Raleigh, saw them come from behind three times, to snatch a win deep into extra time.

Hideaway Cafe are the unbeaten leaders of Division 2 of the Plymouth and West Devon Combination league.

They arrived in East Devon with a reputation as an attacking team, and their lightening quick front three simply blew the Raleigh defence away during the early exchanges to net twice.

Showing quality in every position, and with precision passing and possession of the ball, the visitors made life difficult for the home team.

Raleigh weathered the storm, and gradually found their way back in to the game.

Damien Armes saw a shot cannon off the crossbar, before Riki Pitter scored with a shot from the edge of the area to make it 1-2.

Chances came and went at both ends, before Mark Pavey rose to head in a cross on the hour to level the scores.

Shortly afterwards Pavey was sent off, and Hideaway then scored almost immediately to make it 3-2, although their centre forward did appear to handle the ball before shooting home.

This had the effect of galvanising Raleigh, and from a good team move player-manager Pitter scored a superb equalizer.

With ten minutes remaining in normal time, the Plymouth team scored with an unstoppable free kick from fully forty yards, which flew in to the roof of the net.

Undeterred, Raleigh kept forcing the pace, and drew level for the third time when Jake Boyland brilliantly headed in a cross from the right 4-4.

Colaton Raleigh took control during extra time, playing as if they had twelve men, not ten!

Tony Cox, Adrian Parr, and Boyland all saw shots fly narrowly wide.

Then, in the 117th minute, man of the match Pitter brilliantly turned his marker and fired in to the narrowest of gaps to complete his hat-trick and take Raleigh in to the Devon Senior Cup 4th round.

Manager Pitter said: “We only had seven fit men during extra time. Three of us were struggling with knocks, but my lads showed character, desire, passion, and an incredible will to win. They were all magnificent”.

On Saturday Colaton Raleigh entertain Clyst Valley in a Fresha League Division Two game.
