Pitt so perfect as Woodbury net vital win at Dunks

Dunkeswell Rovers 2:5 Woodbury

Woodbury travelled to Division Five basement dwellers Dunkeswell Rovers knowing that only a victory would keep their promotion hopes alive.

Woodbury made the trip without injured duo Andy Bennett and Michael Simpson whilst Adam Downey was unavailable through work commitments.

The Dunks began well and delivered a real blow to the Woods with a goal inside four minutes! It took a good 15 minutes for the woods to find their feet in the game and they were nearly level on 20 minutes when Kev Pitt ghosted round the Dunks defence and pulled the ball back for Wayne Rowsell who was unable to get enough purchase on the ball to beat the home keeper.

Alex Hughes then saw a trade-mark rocket shot well saved before Pitt was denied by the gloves man at his near post. That did lead to the equaliser though for the resultant Jonny Killick corner was headed home at the far post by Pitt to make it 1-1. However, with half-time beckoning an unfortunate slip by Steve Hunt gifted a Dunks player a chance he took to send his side into the break with a 2-1 lead.

and Alex Hughes to hopefully confuse the Dunks defence. The ploy worked a treat as the Woods scored three times in the opening dozen minutes of the second half. Alex Hughes (2) and Steve Hunt were the scorers to put the Woods into a 4-2 lead with Kev Pitt providing a couple of assists.

On 65 minutes Pitt notched his second when he threaded the ball past the advancing keeper to complete the scoring. Will Bennett was summoned fro the bench to inject fresh legs and he was joined in the closing stages by the veteran Mills who was a whisker away from adding a sixth when his header was marginally over the bar with the keeper beaten.

Kev Pitt was named Man of the Match for his part in four of the goals. Wayne Rowsell also had a fine game with his communication a real asset.

Woods boss Reid said: “ I took the opportunity to rotate some of the squad and will

continue to do so in the next few weeks in order to keep everyone fresh and hopefully free from injury. Next week sees we have no game which is frustrating. However the Reserves have a game against neighbours Otterton and I fancy I’ll have a tough job trying to dissuade 1st team players from taking part in the game!”
