Exmouth Town started the year in fine style with their first ever win at Coombe Valley Teignmouth, writes John Dibsdall.

On a heavy pitch Town started slowly and could have gone a goal down after only two minutes when a shot went narrowly wide.

The hosts were clearly the better aside and deservedly took the lead on eight minutes when a careless tackle was penalised with a penalty which was duly converted.

With Town struggling to find any rhythm in the difficult conditions, Teignmouth continued to press forward, but Town goalkeeper Sandy Allen was well positioned to deal with a couple of near post headers.

As the half developed Town came more into the match. Dan Plater and Andrew Jones both had chances, but Town went into the break one goal in arrears.

Town started the second half in a more positive mood and Dave O’Connor almost scored within thirty seconds of the restart!

O’Connor was a constant threat and the equaliser came on sixty minutes when he was brought down twenty yards from goal and Sam Woodin struck a superb free kick.

Five minutes later Town were awarded a penalty for hand ball and Ali Sawyer, making his first start since he broke his nose a month ago, calmly sent the keeper the wrong way. O’Connor then sent a drive crashing against the crossbar as Town continued to dominate.

In a rare Teignmouth attack, Allen had to make an excellent save to keep the lead intact, but O’Connor showed why he is the joint leading goal scorer in the Division when he raced on to a Tom Lowe through ball and made the game safe with his twenty first goal of the campaign.

With Liverton losing, Town have joined them on level points at the top of the league although Town have played one more game. This Saturday Jody Bolt’s men are away at basement side Axminster Town.

With reports suggesting the Tigers were unlucky to lose 2-0 to third place Stoke Gabriel last Saturday, it may well not to be such an easy afternoon for the Southern Road men.

The one blot on the performance at Teignmouth was the loss of Dan Plater, early in the second half, when he suffered a broken nose and severe concussion following an accidental clash of heads.
