Archant

Newton Poppleford 2, Witheridge Reserves 7

Two well taken goals from Jordan Cooper, one in each half, were unable to prevent a classy Witherdge outfit from running out comfortable winners, writes Jordan Cooper.

The Popples frailties were exposed early on as a swift attack by the visitors sliced the home defence wide open to leave goalkeeper Alex Bowring helpless.

Jordan Cooper finished off a well worked move to level the scores on twenty minutes, and from then on it was mainly one way traffic, and a damage limitation exercise, with a battling popples team working hard to stem the flow.

The league programme has now ended with Newton Poppleford losing all twenty eight Division one league matches, and next season they will aim to add more quality to their squad, for the new campaign in Division Two.

Despite the results, team manager Cliff Cooper is proud of all of his players for ‘sticking with it’ and displaying a fantastic sporting attitude all season, which has been recognised by all of their opponents and the Devon and Exeter League officials.

Many of the players had never played at a level beyond Division Seven before, and it has been a wonderful learning experience for all of them, and also the Newton Poppleford Club.

Finally, a huge thank you to Woodleys Joinery, and Karen and her team at The Cannon Inn, Newton Poppleford, for their sponsorship during the season which has been much appreciated.
