Exmouth Town 1, Plymstock United 0

The Exmouth Town unbeaten run goes on, but this was a contest that they could and indeed should have won far more convincingly than the final score line suggests, writes John Dibsdall.

Town dominated proceedings for long periods, but lacked the final cutting edge that would have eased the nerves and frustrations of the players, management and supporters.

In the opening thirty minutes they created numerous half chances, but despite having efforts on goal, they failed to really work the ‘keeper and the visitors went into the half time break the happier of the two sides.

The second half continued in a similar vein, but the Plymstock defence were resolute and determined to keep a clean sheet.

Such was Town’s overall superiority it was not until the seventy fifth minute that the visitors had an effort on goal.

By then Town should have been ahead, but Ben Shephard was denied when twice clean through and, when he did have the ball in the net, it was ruled out for offside.

The breakthrough finally came on seventy seven minutes. Lloyd Gardner receiving the ball in his own half made another of his trademark raking runs and this time his driven cross was swept home at the far post by the evergreen Phil Everett, a true strikers goal!

The win was Town’s fifth straight league victory and keeps them a point off the top spot with a game in hand on joint leaders Newton Abbot Spurs and Budleigh Salterton.

This Saturday Town are back in cup action this time a home Graddon Vending Devon Premier Cup match against fellow SWPL side Totnes and Dartington (2pm).

A result is required on the day so extra-time and so penalties will take place if required.

Saturday’s visitors are having a mixed season, capable of scoring plenty of goals, but also leaking them in defence and so it seems another entertaining game is in prospect at Southern Road!
