Jack Howarth struck a hat-trick for East Budleigh Reserves as they progressed to the next round of the Golesworthy Cup, writes Mark Auton.

Budleigh began well and took an 11th minute lead with Howarth providing the assist with a corner that Hugo Demetre headed home – his effort clearly crossing the line before being cleared.

Four minutes later, provider turned scorer as Howarth rounded the keeper to make it 2-0.

At times the visitors played some good football, but their end product was lacking and the Budleigh defence of Lewis Fletcher, Jack England, Jack Morgan and Ross Bright kept them at bay.

Five minutes from half-time Demetre cleared a corner, Rory Waite played the ball forward and it was Howarth who did what he does best – powering the ball into the back of the net to make it 3-0.

Budleigh had to wait until the dying minutes to add their fourth; Howarth latched on to a clearance from Shorrock before holding off the defender to find the back of the net to complete his treble.

This Saturday (March 31), East Budleigh entertain Central at Vicarage Road in a Macron League Division Eight meeting.

● East Budleigh Reserves lost their Macron League Division Eight home game against Thorverton.

The game, played 24 hours before the cup success over Awliscombe, was won 2-0 by the Mid Devon men. Goalkeeper Drew Shurrock had a fine game in what was a disappointing performance by the team.
