Exmouth Town sit sixth in the South West Peninsula League Premier Division after a comprehensive 4-1 home win over Newquay, writes John Dibsdall.

The Cornish side have been something of ‘bogey side’ for Town in the past, but apart from a snap shot in the opening minute, they rarely threatened to score and after Jimmy Hinds had put Town ahead with his first goal for the club with a rasping 25-yard effort the result was not in doubt.

Newquay played some attractive football in the build-up and were able to keep the score line to the single goal at the break.

Hinds had the ball in the net two minutes into the second half, but the effort was ruled out for offside. As Town continued to apply the pressure Karl Rickard had a header saved, but Mark Lever was on hand to ram home the rebound.

Ace High then continued his scoring streak with a well-taken goal after good work from Rickard and the two combined again when Rickard hassled the defender into a hurried pass and High’s pace saw him latch on to the loose ball for his ninth goal of the season.

Also on the plus side, Dave Rowe made his first appearance of the season having recovered from an injury sustained in pre-season.

This will prove to be a timely return as Town have lost the services of Chris Ibbeson who has moved to London and Dan Boere who is away with the Royal Marines.

Town are in midweek action when they entertain Saltash United on Wednesday (September 12) with a 7.30pm kick off at Southern Road and then, on Saturday (September 15), Town entertain Western League Premier Division leaders Bridgwater Town in an FA Cup tie (3pm).

Town’s second and third strings both lost their cup ties last weekend, but are both back in cup action this Saturday when they travel to Beer Albion and Priory Reserves in the East Devon Senior Cup and the Devin Intermediate Cup respectively.
