Exmouth Town cruised to a 4-1 victory over Callington in the FA Vase last Saturday to set up a mouth-watering clash in the next round with Bridgwater Town the current leaders of the Toolstation Western League Premier Division, with that tie set to be played at Southern Rod on Saturday week (September 15), writes John Dibsdall.

Town made the perfect start with a goal after just 30 seconds and that after the visiting side had kicked off!

Aaron Denny was the architect with a direct run and pass to Ace High whose powerful shot was too strong for the ‘keeper.

As Town kept up the pressure Denny had a shot saved, Jimmy Hinds saw his effort go narrowly wide and Karl Rickard had an effort cleared off the line.

The second goal duly arrived on 20 minutes when Rickard’s drilled low drive from 22-yards crept inside the post and the visiting glovesman was called upon to make a number of saves to prevent Town adding to their tally.

The start of the second half saw the visitors come more into the game without really threatening, but they were given a lifeline on 62 minutes when a corner went through a number of players at the near post and ended up in the net.

The joy was, however, short lived as Town struck back immediately with Denny again in the thick of the action. This time his well-struck shot brought a good save but Rickard was on hand to smash in the loose ball.

Rickard completed his hat-trick on 78 minutes when he was brought down and buried the resulting spot kick.

This win followed a midweek 1-1 draw at Ivybridge where Town were left to rue a number of missed chances.

They finally took the lead on 55 minutes when Nathan Cooper had a tap-in after Rickard’s shot had been parried away.

After numerous other chances had been squandered Town were pegged back with five minutes remaining when an optimistic swing of the boot from 25-yards ended up with the ball nestling in the top corner of the net!

This Saturday (September 8) Town are home to Newquay and next Wednesday (September 12) they entertain Saltash United, kick off 7.45pm.

Away from the first team the Town Reserves and third team are both still looking for their first points of the season.

It looks like the early fixtures have not been too kind with both teams coming up against opposition that are expected to be in the running for league honours at the end of the season.

This Saturday both teams are in cup action with the second team away to East Allington of the South Devon League in the Devon Premier Cup while the third team visit Elmore thirds to contest a Geary Cup tie.
