Archant

Exmouth Town 1, Launceston 1

A vastly improved performance from Town saw them snatch a dramatic equaliser in the third minute of added time against a Launceston side that had won 4-0 in mid-week, writes John Dibsdall.

Town started brightly and Dan Boere twice came close to scoring. On fourteen minutes he cut in from the right and his left foot drive brought an excellent save from the visiting ‘keeper diving low to his left.

Two minutes later a twenty-five yard free kick left the ‘keeper stranded but unfortunately for Town it crashed against the post and was eventually cleared.

Prolific goal scorer Chris Wright gave evidence of his ability with a snap shot that was well held by Town glovesman Grant Fisher, but it was Wright that opened the scoring on forty minutes. A right wing cross caused hesitancy in Town’s defence and Wright nipped in to turn the ball home.

Apart from the opening minute when Launceston spurned a good chance to increase their lead the second half saw Town drive forward at every opportunity.

Matt Dawson shot wide and Cameron Vere lashed one effort narrowly over the crossbar. Jordan Hopkins set up skipper Karl Rickard only his header was too close to the goal keeper, but it was Rickard who made no mistake heading home a pin point pass from Danny Clay. Indeed Town nearly secured all three points their overall performance deserved when Ace High saw his shot cleared off the line with virtually the last kick of the game.

This Saturday Town travel to Plymouth based Elburton Villa looking to build on this performance and gain their first victory of the season.

Football at Southern Road this Saturday sees the reserves start their campaign in Division Three of the Fresha Devon and Exeter League against Pinhoe (3pm) and then, on Tuesday evening (August 26), they are home again to local rivals Exmouth Amateurs (6.30pm).

Manager Alan Hayward has assembled a squad that will be looking to secure back-to-back promotions and for Alan what will hopefully be his third promotion for the club having won titles in the 2010/11 and 2011/2012 seasons. No pressure then Alan!
