Archant

Exmouth Town 0, Witheridge 0

Saturday’s match with Witheridge showed just how competitive the South West Peninsula League Premier Division is as Town were held for the second week running by one of their leading opponents for the title, writes John Dibsdall.

Both sides were defensively strong and well organised with former professional footballers, Kevin Hill for Town and Chris Vinnicombe for Witheridge bringing all of their experience and expertise to good effect.

The first thirty minutes saw both sides restricted to long range efforts and Town’s first meaningful attack came on thirty four minutes when a well struck volley from Ace High drew a useful save from the visiting ‘keeper.

With Town the main driving force of the first half they started the second in similar vein with Lloyd Gardner having a goal bound shot deflected for a corner. As the half progressed Witheridge came more into the game as an attacking force but apart from a couple of long range efforts rarely troubled Chris Wright in the home goal.

As the game approached the ninety minutes mark Richard Griffin saw his far post header from a Gardner corner half saved by the ‘keeper and then cleared off line but both sides had to settle for a hard earned point in an entertaining 0-0 draw.

With Ivybridge winning they have leapfrogged Town to the top of the table one point ahead having played the same number of games.

Before the match on Saturday there was a minute’s applause in memory of Kevin Bellamy who sadly passed away after a long and courageous battle with cancer. ‘Bells’ played for Town during the 80’s and 90’s, had managed the reserves and was also the club’s official linesman when they entered the South West Peninsula League. There will be a celebration of his life in the clubhouse on Friday March 21. The club will be open from 3pm with everyone being asked to be there by 3.45pm at the latest.

This Saturday Town travel to Plymouth to play Elburton Villa, who currently lie mid table having won six and drawn two of their twelve home games.

When the sides met at Southern Road Town won a bruising encounter 2-1 with goals from Ed Palmer and James Ansell.
