Exmouth Town 1, Teignmouth Town 1.

For only the third time this season Exmouth Town did not manage to bank all three points from a South West Peninsula League game, writes John Dibsdall.

However, they did come off at full-time with their season-long unbeaten record intact after 90 minutes in which they had to work extremely hard against what was clearly a highly motivated Teignmouth side on a wet Wednesday night under the Southern Road floodlights.

For long periods of the first half Town were second best as the highly talented visitors midfield controlled the game. It was against the run of play when Town took the lead on twenty one minutes. A long cross into the box was met first time by Dan Boere and whilst the shot lacked power it was perfectly placed and nestled in the far corner of the net.

Eight minutes later and Teignmouth were deservedly level. A quickly taken free kick took Town by surprise and the wing back ran through unchallenged to score. Whilst the visitors were winning the midfield battle they were unable to create any more clear chances but it was Town who were glad to hear the half time whistle.

After the break the positions changed. The first half had seen Town hustled off the ball far too easily. Now they began to find space, command the midfield and generally take the game to their opponents.

Territorial advantage brought a number of corners and goalmouth scrambles but no one was able to land a killer blow. Boere had strong appeals for a penalty turned down and a couple of very tight offside decisions went against Town. Teignmouth too had their shouts for a penalty waived away as they looked to punish on the counter attack.

Despite the best efforts of both sides the second half remained scoreless and the draw meant a well earned point and whilst this ended Town’s run of fifteen consecutive league victories it saw them extend their lead at the top of the table to nine points.

Town, who entertain Totnes and Dartington on Saturday, have 11 games to play. A look at the remaining fixtures for their nearest challengers suggests that, if Stoke Gabriel won all their remaining 14 matches (that would include beating Town!), then a total of 76 points would see the title delivered to Southern Road.

That would mean Town requiring eight wins from their remaining games.

A more likely scenario is that the challengers will all drop points in the busy run-in and so a total of 70 points is likely to be enough. That would mean Town picking up 19 from their final 11, six wins and a draw would suffice!

Table after the 1-1 draw with Teignmouth Town.
