Exmouth Town play the biggest game in their recent history on Saturday when they host Sherborne Town in the 1st Round of the FA Vase, writes Steve Birley.

The Dorset side play in the Toolstation League First Division and Town have already seen off Elmore from that Division and also Wells City from the Premier Division in this competition.

Town boss Richard Pears missed his side’s game last Saturday to take in a trip to Bristol where he saw Sherborne lose a Les Phillips Cup tie 4-2.

Pears said: “What I saw is a very well organised side with two lively strikers and a strong midfield. They looked what I’d kindly call a typical Bristol side and will present as tough a challenge as we have faced to date this season. However, my lot are currently at the top of their game and confidence is very high. Sadly we must do without Andrew Thompson who is cup tied and that leaves me having to decide between a couple of players to fill his considerable boots. We do have a squad of 16 on duty for the game, and to be frank I could put any of that number out starting and it would not weaken us in any shape or form, that’s how competitive this group of players is.”

The Town chief continued: “We have got a training session to work on final bits and pieces and fortunately we have no injury worries. I have enormous faith in the players who I am sure are going to relish this sort of challenge. Of course I would love to be in next Monday afternoon’s draw for Round 2, but for now all eyes are focussed on hopefully doing a number on Sherborne Town.”

So what about the Town FA Vase opponents? Sherborne Town were last in Toolstation League action last midweek when they drew 4-4 at home with Elmore - ironically another side who Town have already beaten in the FA Vase this season!

They have played just seven games in the league this term and are unbeaten after three league outings away from home. They drew their opening game 3-3 at Cheddar and then drew 1-1 at Westbury United. Their most recent away league game saw them win 4-2 at Warminster Town on Saturday, September 29.

Jarman , Caines and Day are the three Sherborne Town players to have scored more tha two goals this season, Jarman is top scorer to date with five goals.

The game kicks off at 3pm and Town are hoping that the supporters come out in their droves for the biggest game Southern Road has seen for many moons.
