Exmouth Town’s players and supporters endured a frustrating Wednesday evening when they were held to a goalless draw by their coastal rivals Sidmouth Town, writes John Dibsdall.

The visitors, having opened their season with three defeats, came with a game plan that saw them playing with a lone striker and defending in depth.

To their credit they were disciplined and committed throughout the ninety minutes but Town were left to rue a number of gilt edge chances that went begging.

As early as the third minute strikers Ace High and Ben Shepard set up a clear scoring opportunity for Dan Boere, but his shot was blazed over the crossbar.

Shephard, clear on goal, was then denied by the keeper who then produced another fine save to deny High as half time approached.

Town’s ‘keeper, Liam Jones, was a virtual spectator, but had to be at his sharpest to turn a close range header over the crossbar.

The second half was one-way traffic as Town laid siege to the visitor’s goal.

There were at least three strong appeals for hand ball in the penalty area, none given, two blinding point blank saves by Sidmouth keeper Robbie Powell, two “goals” disallowed and another effort that came crashing back off the crossbar.

Clearly this will be seen as two points dropped, but could also be the way that a number of sides will play when they come to Southern Road.

Had Town scored from one of their early chances the whole complex of the match would have changed and on another day one or two of at least five crucial decisions may have been given in Town’s favour
